This is the zoo started by the late Gerald Durrell the famous author and conservationst. This zoo is different to most major zoo's in that you will only find rare or endangered species here with most being smaller and less familiar animals. It's major purpose is quite definetly conservation followed by education and lastly entertainment. This is not to say that your average visitor won't spend a wonderful day here.
In 1959, author and naturalist Gerald Durrell founded a Zoo on Jersey in the English Channel Islands as a sanctuary where endangered animals could find safety and a chance to recover. His dream was to save animals from extinction - a dream that has since become reality for the Mauritius kestrel. Of the 100 species at Jersey Zoo, most are threatened and an ever increasing number are endangered, many critically so. Programmes conducted in Jersey include efforts to save the world's ratest bat, duck, pigeon, tortoise and snake. Other animals at Jersey Zoo include lowland gorillas, Sumatran orang utans, Andean bears, lemurs of Madagascar, maned wolves, crowned cranes, ibis, poison dart frogs, iguanas, snails and many more.
